COMPOSITION

Composition is the most important part of your painting. Without composition you do not have a painting.

There are two sorts of paintings:

DECORATIVE ART

FINE ART

DECORATIVE ART

Decorative art is not "composed" and is often sky/sea with a middle horizon line. This is OK but it is accepted that you will not want to live with this sort of painting forever. They have a "short shelf life"

It's like Spring cleaning every year, you will want to "update" this sort of paintingand replace it.

FINE ART

Now look at the painting again - after it has been composed with the "Golden Section" or the "Golden Mean"

Which painting do you think you could live with forever and appreciate?

Do you get a sense of HARMONY?? with the composed painting?

THE GOLDEN SECTION OR THE GOLDEN MEAN

HARMONY is the key word.

'Harmony is what most buyers are looking for and 'Harmony' is what most artists are seeking. (just think about all the famous and successful artists - aren't all their paintings harmonious?)

Fibonacci was one of the mathmeticians in the 18th century who established the golden section - which is the perfect harmony of space.

It's very complicated but we do have some very simple tips of always ensuring you create a perfectly composed painting.

ABSTRACT ART - RULE OF THIRDS

Look at the panting to the left. It is of "abstract" form - abstract means non recogniseable form.

It is a best selling print BECAUSE it is well composed.

Look at how the form is composed within the mathematical thirds. I suggest even if you look at a Jackson Polluck painting - incredibly you will find that the painting is composed with mathematical thirds.
